## Feature request details
### What problem does this address?
The Gutenberg block editor omitted the description list element despite it being included in the HTML5 specification and being an important semantic structure for accessibility. See https://www.w3.org/TR/WCAG20-TECHS/H40.html.
Description lists (<dl>, <dt>, and <dd>) provide meaningful structure for content that consists of terms and their associated descriptions. Common examples on UW websites include contact information, definitions, glossaries, service details, program requirements, office locations, and other key/value content.
Because neither WordPress core nor UW Theme 2.0 currently provides a Description List block, authors must either:
- Request or perform custom development
- Install a third-party plugin.
- Use less appropriate structures such as tables, columns, unordered lists or heading/paragraph combinations.
These workarounds create barriers for non-technical content authors and discourage the use of semantic HTML.
### What is your proposed solution?
Add a native Description List block to UW Theme 2.0.
The block should generate semantic HTML using the standard <dl>, <dt>, and <dd> elements and provide a user-friendly editing experience similar to other list-based Gutenberg blocks.
Suggested features:
- Add, edit, delete, and reorder term/description pairs.
- Support rich text formatting within descriptions.
- Allow multiple descriptions for a single term.
- Support standard UW Theme spacing and alignment controls.
- Produce clean, accessible HTML without requiring authors to write code.
This would give authors access to an important semantic HTML element while maintaining the ease of use expected from the block editor.
### How will this impact you?
This would improve accessibility, content quality, and the authoring experience.
Benefits include:
- Encourages the use of semantic HTML for term-and-definition content.
- Makes accessible content easier to create for non-technical authors.
- Reduces reliance on Custom HTML blocks and manual coding.
- Reduces authoring errors caused by hand-written markup.
- Provides a consistent, theme-supported presentation across UW sites.
- Reduces the need for custom plugins or site-specific development.
- Helps content creators choose an appropriate structure instead of misusing tables or other layout techniques.
My team supports content authors with varying levels of technical expertise. A dedicated Description List block would make it significantly easier to create standards-compliant, accessible content while reducing training and support overhead.
### Priority
Choose **one** priority level:
- [X] **High** — This feature would significantly expand what I can do in WordPress or support an important workflow or content need. It would provide strong value to many users.
- [ ] **Medium** — This would meaningfully improve my workflow or make tasks easier, but I can still accomplish my goals without it.
- [ ] **Low** — A helpful enhancement that adds convenience or polish, but isn’t essential to my core work.
