DMR-First for UW MRSEC plugin install
Need a plugin to be installed in WISCWEB. The National Science Foundation has wanted for many years all of its centers and facilities to be more accessible to researchers outside their home institutions. One need is discovery: Who has what capabilities? How much do they cost? Who do I contact to get access? NSF has supported various web sites / portals to provide this information, but they are continually out of date, poorly supported, etc.
DMR FIRST is the latest attempt to solve this problem. It is designed to harvest data from local websites, like wcnt.wisc.edu, that are already properly maintained and collect them in one place. It has other planned benefits, like the provision of DOIs for instruments, but those are secondary right now.
DMR FIRST is supported by NSF, and they have asked the MRSEC centers to be the guinea pigs. That means installing an early version, trying it out, and providing feedback. This has the disadvantage that the installation may be some work, but the advantage that the developers will be highly motivated to support us as we go.
Participating in DMR FIRST is important to the success of the MRSEC here at UW. If it’s successful, I think we might also want to use it to create campus-wide core facilities pages. It is also likely to become a requirement from our funders, rather than optional.
I can facilitate setting up a meeting with the experts at Penn State.
